As the year comes to an end, I would like to share my final progress update with you. Even though I didn’t accomplish everything I wanted to, (due to my dislocated knee) I’m still very happy with what I have learned. I learned the different proper techniques for various different dance genres, as well as what equipment you need, and what it takes to be a dancer. Overall, I has a lot of fun doing this project, and I would definitely do it again!

This week I took the time to study and rehearse ballet. Although I am quite sore now, I'm really happy that I started my project off this way. Ballet benefits all different types of dance because it helps teach proper technique and form. I reviewed different moves like pliés, chassés, rond de jambes, and my personal favourite, pirouettes. I had a lot of fun doing this, and i'm excited to practice more!
Before I started any choreography, I made sure to spend at least five minutes stretching so that I don't injure myself. Today I went rummaging through my closet, looking for old shoes and dance equipment. During this time I found my jazz shoes, ballet shoes, dance socks, and ballroom shoes. A couple of months ago I purchased a cheap pair of pointe shoes, but they aren’t broken into yet. I continued with my daily-dancer fitness routines, and began researching different platforms that I could find choreography. Unfortunately, my mentor wasn't able to provide me with anything yet, so I took my time finding professional videos on YouTube. Before I actually start to get into the choreography, I hope to get my flexibility back, and see if there is anything else I should purchase.
I have a space where I can dance in my basement with a large mirror set-up so that I can review my movement and posture. I’m hoping to start the choreography fairly soon, and share my progress with you. Here is a picture of my pointe shoes! Over the past couple of weeks, I have researched the fitness routines of dancer. During this time I found multiple different exercises that occur in their daily life. For example, in order to maintain a healthy body, dancers spend 30 minutes to 1 hour each day focusing on cardio-based activities, such as jogging. I decided since we are all quarantined at home, during this unusual time, this would be the perfect opportunity to take on this task. On colder days I spend around 30 minutes jogging on the treadmill, and on warmer days, i roughly spend an hour jogging with my dogs around the neighborhood.
Some other ways that dancers exercise consists of strength training. including core, arm, and leg workouts. This can be done through simple techniques such as repeated crunches, push-ups, and lunges. These activities help keep the body toned and well-balanced. I have attempted to do some strength training recently with the help of my NTC app on my phone. I have been doing roughly 15 minutes every 3rd day or so, and I am hoping to continue doing this on the daily. Dancers also practice Pilates and Yoga which helps improve their posture and balance, as well as strength. It also contributes to helping a dancer improve their flexibility and overall being. In the end, the fitness routines of dancers sounds like a bit of a hassle, but I am willing to take on this challenge of doing whatever it takes to become a healthy, strong, well-balanced dancer. |
